IgM, predominately secreted in a pentamer formation, is the largest of the five major immunoglobulin classes- IgM, IgG, IgA, IgE, and IgD. Providing a natural immunity without needing be pre-exposed to a particular antigen, it is able to serve as a first line of defense due to it's high avidity and ability to bind a number of unrelated antigens. IgM is also the first immunoglobulin generated in response to an infection and serves a vital role as an activator of complement.
