Electrophoresis is a common technique in which nucleic acids or proteins are separated within a gel matrix according to their ability to migrate when placed in an electric field. The larger the protein or DNA, the slower it migrates. Tracking dyes are used to visualize the movement of the molecules, and once migration is complete, the molecules are stained to reveal their locations.
