The most commonly isolated Campylobacter species is C. jejuni, which can be identified via its antibiotic susceptibility profile of cephalothin resistance and naladixic susceptibility in conjunction with its ability to hydrolyze hippurate. These lightly stained gram negative bacteria have a delicate curved "seagull" shape to them. They are also one of the most common causes of diarrheal illness in the US- not so fun!
